The New Hampshire Lottery is America’s oldest lottery, turning 50 today (March 12), and during the next few months, officials will be celebrating its history and the more than $1.5 billion that has been put into the state’s education system since its founding.
The lottery has also introduced a new, limited edition, $25 scratch ticket, Granite Millions, to celebrate the birthday. The ticket has a top prize of $2 million and will have “the highest overall payout in the United States of $25 million in prizes to be won,” according to officials.
Gov. Maggie Hassan, D-Exeter, kicked of the lottery’s five-decade celebration by purchasing the first Granite Millions ticket at the Statehouse earlier today.
“Fifty years ago, we set out to bring the fun and excitement of winning to the people of New Hampshire, becoming the first Lottery in the nation,” noted Charlie McIntyre, executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery, in a statement. “You might say the New Hampshire Lottery invented lucky and we intend on creating more lucky Lottery winners in the next 50 years.”
According to officials, Gov. John King signed the bill making New Hampshire home to the first state-run lottery in the nation on April 30, 1963 and the first tickets went on sale on March 12, 1964.
Eleven “customer appreciation events” are being held around the state through September. Offering special events, prizes, and promotions, according to officials. The events stated earlier this afternoon at the Bi-Wise Market in Allenstown.
